The Desert Knowledge Australia Virtual Meeting Place (renamed from Inter-Regional Video Network in 2008 ) connects people working in a range of fields across desert Australia and beyond, linked by a common interest in building economically and environmentally sustainable and harmonious communities across inland Australia.
The network meets every six weeks via audio or videoconferencing with web support.
Members share information about projects and activities in their regions which have cross border interest. It is also a forum to discuss issues in common across desert Australia, identify gaps requiring research or resources and opportunities for projects and initiatives.
At each meeting, there is a showcase project or topic of discussion which has been chosen by the members.
History of Virtual Meeting Place
A vision of Desert Knowledge Australia was that of a broad network spanning inland Australia seeking to develop, share and teach areas of knowledge to improve desert Australian livelihoods and find national and international markets for this expertise. A key element of the vision was the necessary cooperation required to create the critical mass needed to service international markets.
The establishment of a cross border network was a result of workshops held at the 2002 Desert Knowledge Symposium. It also built upon a network of interested parties that developed out of the Desert Knowledge Australia Roadshow which took place earlier that year.
The first Desert Knowledge Australia Inter-Regional Videoconference was held in March 2003, and meetings have been held every six weeks since then.

We thank Telstra Country Wide for their support of this network. Telstra Country Wide provides this network with access to audio and video conferencing services.
