Desert Knowledge Precinct

Developing the people, knowledge and economy of the desert

Desert Knowledge Australia is responsible for the development and management of the Desert Knowledge Precinct.

The Precinct is a 73 hectare site in Alice Springs that provides a national and international focal point for desert knowledge activities.

The Desert Knowledge Precinct reflects over $35 million investment by the Northern Territory and Australian Governments. Current infrastructure includes:

The Precinct was first conceptualised in 2000 as a place to create a "knowledge community" to share and leverage resources. By 2007 the first building was complete and home to Desert Knowledge Australia and the Desert Knowledge CRC.

What else will be at the Desert Knowledge Precinct?

Stage One of the Precinct is complete. Plans for Stage Two include:

A Shared Library

  • the knowledge centre of the Precinct
  • to become the location of several libraries
  • designed as a significant element of the central courtyard complex.

A Living Desert Centre

  • to showcase people of desert Australia, their lives, livelihoods, culture and interactions with the natural environment
  • celebrate the contemporary interface between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultures
  • provide an opportunity for visitors and tourists to experience the vibrant artistic and knowledge capacities of the central Australia
