Outback tourism in Australia extends across five states and territories:
- Queensland
- New South Wales
- Northern Territory
- South Australia
- Western Australia.
While each aggressively develops and markets their own part of outback tourism, an opportunity was identified to take a more coordinated approach in solving cross-border issues. The Our Outback Tourism Partnership was created to address the situation
Focus Areas
The Project, which is part of the Desert Knowledge Australia Outback Business Networks Project, will focus on:
- Building reputation
- Enhancing research and statistics
- Encouraging sustainability
- Lifting capability
- Improving access
- Increasing collaboration
Partners
The Our Outback Tourism Partnership draws together key tourism organisations to work together to implement the project and consists of representatives from:
- Australia’s Golden Outback
- Desert Knowledge Australia
- Outback Queensland Tourism Association
- Outback Regional Tourism Organisation
- South Australian Tourism Commission
- South Australian Regional Tourism Organisations
- Tourism Australia
- Tourism Central Australia
- Tourism NSW

- Tourism Queensland
- Tourism WA
Current projects:
- Development of a tourism virtual meeting place that will enable the implementation and facilitation of cross border collaborative opportunities for the tourism sector
- Facilitation of opportunities for cross border industry interpretive training
- Development of an outback portal
- Provision of networking opportunities for home stay operators
- Identification of border barriers and potential ways to reduce their impact on tourism
- Connecting the outback through outback pathways and drives with a focus on commercial continuity
- Identifying other opportunities for cross border RTO and VIC marketing collaboration
