A day for Alice Springs leaders: present and future

A story by Anouska Zerna of Bellette.

In a calendar coincidence making it a weekend assigned to leaders both current and future, the Youth Desert Leadership program kicked off on the same day the greater community voted for the members of the 12th Alice Springs Town Council.

Now in its second year, Youth Desert Leadership is a partnership between Desert Knowledge Australia and the four senior schools of Alice Springs: Centralian Senior College, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College, St Philip’s College and Yirara College. The program aims to build leadership potential by developing participants’ skills, engaging them with the community, and encouraging new ways of working together.

A group of fourteen students and four teachers (one from each of the participating schools), gathered at the Desert Knowledge Precinct on Saturday March 23rd to take part in the Program’s opening retreat facilitated by Mark Yettica-Paulson. Arriving mid-morning, I was immediately taken by Mark’s casual energy and his entertaining presentation methods that engage youth and subtly introduce leadership themes.
